      Hey dude, terrific questions!

Is it better control the amount of edging with my back foot or front foot?

As with skidded and other turns on a snowboard, you almost always want to initiate the carve with the front foot, control the bulk of the carve with both feet, and finish using the back foot.  Once you get the hang of it, it really helps!

Other times I do get the carve, but I catch an edge while evening out between the toe and heelside turns and l fall.  Do you have any advice for controlling that?

The above will help you with this.  This especially applies when on steeper runs like blues and blacks.  When completing the carve (or skidded carve or skidded turn for that matter) the back foot will have more weight and angle sending you into a “pure carve” for a moment.  This is necessary.  From this you have a

Hey Frosty, First off, i'd just like to say that this is my first year snowboarding, and I'm HOOKED!!  I just can't get enough of it!!!  I've gone every two weeks since February and plan go every weekend until the season is over.  I just wish I lived closer to the slopes 🙁  but I guess four hours away is not so bad, especially when you can take a ski bus… Now, just FYI, I've never actually taken a formal lesson; what  i've learned i picked up from a buddy who I always go with and helps me out or from websites like yours (thanks for all the good tips by the way).  I think that I've made good progress so far; I can do toe/heel side turns fine, get reasonable speed down the slopes, even got carving down.  The only problem I have is with control while carving on the blue slopes. On the green slopes i can carve no problem, but on the harder, steeper slopes it gets tricky for me.  I'm goofy footed, and when I start to carve toeside I think I try to edge too much and my tip ends up pointing uphill so I can't complete the carve.  Is it better control the amount of edging with my back foot or front foot? Other times I do get the carve, but I catch an edge while evening out between the toe and heelside turns and l fall.  Do you have any advice for controlling that? Should I go faster or make my turns wider?  Also, this may seem like a stupid question but I've been wondering…when does the snowboarding season formally end? I know it probably depends on the amount of snow on any given year, but do the resorts announce it each year or do they have a set date every year when it ends? Thanks for your help.

I just went to Big Powderhorn over the weekend, its about 40 mins from Mercer, WI. I'm from chicago, and it took about 6hrs to get there. We all had a great time, great conditions for this year! I even hit a good amount of powder, and don't think i hit any ice. There are two other resorts connected to it also you can go to…Indianhead and Blackjack…haven't been to those however. We went to Whitecap – on the second day of our trip, and it was horrible – not very snowboarder friendly, rough n tough runs – so avoid that place like the plague! I'll tell you that  I'm a total newb – this is my first season (and i'm so excited) and I've only gone a few times – so I had a real hard time there – very icy/hard….even the experienced riders I was with had a difficult time….made me lose my conf

Oh, no problem. Well, Big Bear resorts aren't even fully open. Snow Summit (one of the resorts in Big bear) opened on wed. I'm planning to go this sunday if i get the chance. I'll get a picture of my new setup as soon as possible. I had the bindings put in because I thought it would be complicated and he installed it at like 15, -1 or -3? i forget. And he installed it alittle back on the board (last 4 holes on the board for the bindings?) Then i realized how easy it was and i came home and did it myself after doing alittle research. I don't know much about bindings and stuff because I only rented all the time. So I heard that the best basic setup is 21 and 9. So I move the bindings back to the middle of the board and put the angles to 21 and 9. If you can tell me if thats a good setup to start with, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.
