Awesome i wanted to know how much the ride was like a skateboard on a half. i dont expectto air out on the 1st day at all (i have 2 full weekdays, the kids will be in school so ill havethe pipe to myself, to ride this…its the only thing im going to ride).Ive been workin in the living room trying to figure out my run on how to stay toeside theentire length of the pipe because thats my stronger side, so atleast i have my run plannedfor the trip :)how much pipe experience do you have? the only trick i want to do is a method which ican easily do off of any ramp feature…how will this differ in a pipe verses say… a hip. andi know a hip landing is not vert, but the execution is more what im wondering about.thanks man!
Hey frosty, any updates or news on this project you're workin on? π
josh -Frosty's advice is golden. from the sounds of your troubles its either all in your head as in you cantmentally picture it..which will cause you to fall, or you're opening up too early. Try holding your windup through the landing. It will probably over rotate you on the ground, but you can always toesidecorrect and spin back to riding regular instead of switch. If its mental, just know the moment you drop in that you're going to land it. Dont think twice, dont thinkwhat if, just know. This will also start preparing you mentally for things above 5's. When you go for 7'sand above, you loose your orientation so easy it gets scary, so you just have to know and have faiththat when you leave the kicker you ARE going to land it. You'd be surprised how much that helps. When I'm learning a new trick I just automatically mentally picture myself goijosh -Frosty's advice is golden. from the sounds of your troubles its either all in your head as in you cantmentally picture it..which will cause you to fall, or you're opening up too early. I've gotten to where I dont even imagine falling, and that takesalot off of your stress. It helps you focus.Β Take that in with the rotation techniques Frosty said andyou'll be f/s in no time. I think its rides top bindingso anywhere that sells ride stuff should sell those. the ex's arnt bad either. and a word about flows,ok, yes they are a step in type. they are easier than straps. they are however NOT the ultimatemost simple thing ever created, and just dont get pulled in by the hype. i use flows on my parkboard because they are simpler and quicker, but they arnt a “put your boot in and click” binding.you have to wiggle your boot in under the full foot strap, and then use the high back wedge theboot into position, then lock. i do love mine, but the 1st time i used them i was all excited aboutthe step-click things my friends told me (who ironically did not have flows) and found out itsnot that simple. It is a great binding though, just dont let anyone fool you into telling you its a TRUE step in.The end of the season sales do apply to bindings and boots, but usually not as much as boards.ie, you're not going to get a $300 k2 clicker binding for $100. 20% is about the norm, and youcan sometimes find 40% or so. if you dont like the boas, laces arnt bad. i have the forum constantboots and i love them. they walk and look like converse all stars, which is why i bought them.if you're not looking for park, you should look into a better board. the recon is almost directlymade for park. its soft for rails, and cheap so you can replace it easily if you break it on ajump. its good on ice for carving because it gives alot more which keeps you from catchingedges, which is also nice, but if you're looking for a good forum board for all mountain riding,i suggest the Grudge. its a heavy flex board and has a kick back stance for powder and alpineriding. its my main board, and they still sell last years model for cheap..like around $300or less. of course ebay probably has some used ones, but this is one TOUGH board, soeven a used one isnt going to have any damage to hurt it unless the edges are screwedfrom rails. its very responsive, and if you do want to catch some serious air, that flex 6will hurl you like you've never been hucked before. ha!the sales should be starting up shortly! marchish is going to be a good time to look, but june looks better. just keep lookin till you find that deal that says OH MY GOD BUYME NOW !@#$ ARRGH BBHABHABHABH, and yes, thats exactly how it will soundin your head π happy hunting! keep up with the questions and we'll do ourbest to answer them. thats what we're here for.February 15, 2009 at 11:49 pm in reply to: New gear (boots, bindings and board) for intermediate snowboarder! #3364This is just my opinion, but my stats match yours except weight. i go between 148 and 155 depending on whative eaten all week (i go to the gym and run, so my weight constantly changes).I also have a Forum Recon, but its a 146, and I have a Forum Manual 156, basically the sameboard just 2 different graphics and sizes, and honestly I wouldnt go over a 156.Sometimes the shear length of the 156 for my height/weight makes it uncontrollable, dependingon conditions, and going too far in the opposite direction will make hitting runs slow and boring. My favorite all time board is a 154, and I know its 2cm…but it does make all the differenceto me in the world. There hasn't been a condition that I cannot ride that one.As far as price, when summer rolls around, most boards drop to 50-60% off, so if you can standto wait, you can get a 5 star board for a 2 star price. During the summer months, boards thatwere 5-600 dollars will be half that, unless they were a limited run or a hard to find,(look up libtech skate banana..if you FIND one..they're still expensive)I like frosty's choice on boots. And when you get your own, you can use a heat gun, or a hairdryer to make them fit more snug. There are several youtube videos on how to “shrink”your liner to make the heels fit tighter. My boots came with instructions on how to do thisand I can dig them up if you want to know.I dont know about the “more metal the better” rule. I have Ride Lx bindings, and every piecethat can possibly be metal, is metal..IΒ think they handle great. My favorite binding for sure, but I also have Flow something or other I cant remember the type..all plastic, and they area little more comfortable, due to them having alittle more foam. But the truth is, bindingsare going to break. They just are. I dont know if any really outlast the others, I've brokenseveral boards, but nothing more than a toe strap on a binding (which is replaceable) buttheres nothing on the Ride Lx bindings that will break making you replace the entire binding. But I haven't broken anything on the Flow's which are all plastic…so lets leave that to debate.a 146 will be a great board for you. not only is it in your ride zone, as long as you dont clear 5'10 it'll stay in your ride zone. just dont get fat!Β π (its a joke!)morrow is an o.g. they know their stuff. they're under the radar because they're more techand design than hardcore kiddie graphics and street slang, but their quality is up therewith k2, burton, forum, roxy, rossi, the big dogs.you got a great board at a great price, if you get the 146 you'll be pleased.when you get it set up, post some pics! id love to see your ride!and stick around the forums. this place is alittle slow now, but its really starting to take off.and its a very friendly no shit talking site. we're all here to learn from one another and pushone another to the next level.so welcome to the boards, welcome to the fun, and welcome to the family!”the onlya 146 will be a great board for you. not only is it in your ride zone, as long as you dont clear 5'10 it'll stay in your ride zone. just dont get fat!Β π (its a joke!)morrow is an o.g. they know their stuff. they're under the radar because they're more techand design than hardcore kiddie graphics and street slang, but their quality is up therewith k2, burton, forum, roxy, rossi, the big dogs.you got a great board at a great price, if you get the 146 you'll be pleased.when you get it set up, post some pics! id love to see your ride!and stick around the forums. this place is alittle slow now, but its really starting to take off.and its a very friendly no shit talking site. we're all here to learn from one another and pushone another to the next level.so welcome to the boards, welcome to the fun, and welcome to the family!”the only way out now, is in a box” – malibu's most wanted ;)and tune in thursday in the instruction section for the weekly trick tip! and dont be afraidto post information to help other riders. we hope you'll continue to think of us asfriends and family.nah, that was the same trip i broke my ankle though. its just one of those things man. ya know?its ashame you cant go to vermont in april! ill be there riding with rowan!
hahaha i should have taken a pic of my knee from last time i rode. the whole cap was scabbed overfrom where i landed and slid on my left knee cap probably around 30ft across solid ice. it was soogross man. the liner in my snowpants was red on my left leg haha.
josh is right about the length. im 5'8 and my pro board is a 154. its the max size for me..though i do have a 156, but its for rails. i like the better flexibility, which is what i was talking about earlier liking different size boards.for $120 id keep it and ride it. ive never heard of morrison either. but alot of the sites like dog funk reallyonly carry the big dogs when it comes to boards. stuff they KNOW they can get rid of, ie burton. so giveit a try, you might like it ok. and it'll be a great board when you grow alittle more.the reason i ride a board thats real short is, we have alot of ice here where i live, so speed has neverbeen an issue, control is. and shorter boards are easier to control. so when im shooting to a ramp todo a trick, i can hit ice patches to increase my speed like i was riding a longer board, but have thevery very light swing weight of thejosh is right about the length. im 5'8 and my pro board is a 154. its the max size for me..though i do have a 156, but its for rails. i like the better flexibility, which is what i was talking about earlier liking different size boards.for $120 id keep it and ride it. ive never heard of morrison either. but alot of the sites like dog funk reallyonly carry the big dogs when it comes to boards. stuff they KNOW they can get rid of, ie burton. so giveit a try, you might like it ok. and it'll be a great board when you grow alittle more.the reason i ride a board thats real short is, we have alot of ice here where i live, so speed has neverbeen an issue, control is. and shorter boards are easier to control. so when im shooting to a ramp todo a trick, i can hit ice patches to increase my speed like i was riding a longer board, but have thevery very light swing weight of the shorter board (which is a 146)its complicated mathmatics that will drive you bonkers!hey seriously though, the skateboard knee pads work great. you should give them a try.
151 is too long. a good rule of thumb if you cant find a board calculator is the board should be betweenyour chin and your nose, until you're good enough to know what really suits you. (i ride a board thatsshorter than my chin, but thats another story)since you're 12, yes you will grow into it. but you're a good bit off right now. then again there is notelling if you will hit a growth spurt over the summer and fall into the right height for the board.its a tricky situation, because you could get a board for your height now, grow, and have it be tooshort next season.i dont know what to tell you because of these issues. you have experience riding, so you can probablycontrol it. its not like its going to be COMPLETELY unresponsive. but it is going to be harder thanyou are used to until you grow into it. how tall are the the members of your family? do you know abou151 is too long. a good rule of thumb if you cant find a board calculator is the board should be betweenyour chin and your nose, until you're good enough to know what really suits you. get some skate pads. like half pipe knee pads. they're usually pretty stream line.or do it like the rest of us and suck it up, be a manΒ :lol:i live south so i dont even wear a base layer. boxers and snowpants! i just tryto make sure i land on my backΒ π
yeah, hmm, i wonder who that could be…. π lol
I like to leave it down, under a beanie or a hat, and let it get nasty. My hair isnt long enough to pulloff the “pocahantas” look. π π
