However, in the general realm of snowboard boots, not all of them are created equal. I spent a solid three seasons with a great pair of Forum Kicker boots laced to my feet, but their life cycle was near its sad, sad end and a new pair of boots became necessary. Another pair of Kickers was a possibility, but I'd had my eye on Nitro boots for some time before a decision had to be made. They had a progressive shape, and just looked more functional and cool than other boots. Off-season gear sales are awesome and I was able to pick up a pair of Nitro Team snowboard boots for just over $100, a steep discount from the original price tag of $200+. It was a bit of leap of faith, as these boots have an unconventional lacing system, but Nitro proved to me they can make a great pair of boots in addition to the solid boards they manufacture. I've always maintained that boots are the most important piece of any set up, though they often get the least amount of money/time/attention. Three seasons of riding, including two of instructing and using the boots almost everyday lead to much of the support being gone most importantly, but also leaky seems left my feet soaked at the end of the day and they were pretty packed out creating weird fits in multiple places. Anyway boots are the only piece of your riding equipment that touches your foot and are a big slice of the pie chart of factors that determine whether your day will be enjoyable. The Nitro Team boots excel in the three categories I consider important in a boot – performance, comfort, and durability. Comfort is covered in the plush liner and medium flex outer as well as in the lacing system. The TLS lacing system does away with hockey skate style laces and gives you a faster way to get these on your hogs. Two independent lace panels can be tightened by the pull of a tab at the end, with one tab controlling the bottom of the boot and the other the top. I've found that the system stays tight throughout the entire day, and is a quick and easy fix to get tight again as all it takes is a couple tugs. The fact that the whole system revolves around pulling with sometimes brutish force worried me at first, but everything has held up nicely. Durability is important to me because I will have a summer season this year and won't have the resources to get new boots if these fail. The lacing system has held up, and everything else is in as good working order as the day they were new. I could see these boots lasting a long time, hopefully around the three seasons the Kicker's held up, even with 60+ days riding per season. Finally, performance. These boots have a nice medium flex that performs all over the mountain. I can pair these boots with my stiff Burton Cartel bindings or soft Union Forces and ride any terrain with optimal performance. These boots are good all around park boots because of all the padding in sole and can take all kinds of hard, flat landings, which are generally the bane of freestyle snowboarder and skier's existences. They may not be flexy enough for pure jibbers, but these boots sure do love kickers and halfpipes. I don't get to ride too much powder here in SD, but when paired with a stiff binding such as Cartel's I get instant response and perfect control. Best of both worlds would be a phrase I would use to describe these booties. Final Thoughts Nitro makes a great product, whether it be snowboards, bindings or boots. These boots do it all on and off the mountain with their price being reasonable (on sale of course) and they look great as well. The Team boots have everything I need in a boot, and the lacing system is effective as well. Props to Nitro!
