hey,im relatively new to snowboarding and have just purchased my own snowboard only to find out on close inspection that there are some moderate scratches on the base, and some patches of yellowish discoloration on the base near the edge of the board.i understand that the scratches can be fixed (not sure how easy on a sintered base) but im not sure about the discoloration and what causes is?also one of the stickers that the shop had on the board left a kind of darker gripper patch on the base, would this be easy to remove with a cleaner of some sort?note: have not ridden the board as of yet. cheers, alan
Welcome Alan. DO NOT USE A CLEANER ON THE BASE OF THE BOARD. On the topsheet is OK tho.If you purchased the board at a shop, have them do an “initial tune and edge detune” on the board. That will polish out the scratches and might remove some of the discoloration too.

yeah i was pretty hesitant to use a cleaner in the base as i understand there is special stuff for that.but my main concern is that i bought a dud board due to the discoloration. should i be worried about this? what would discolor a white base?
alan – all of my snowboards have a white base, and all of them BUT 1 have mild discoloration. The oldest one ismy k2 dart which has turned a pee yellow color, and im pretty sure this is because the board hasnt been ridden,let alone tuned, in 2 seasons, so its probably dried out.My recon also has a pure white base, which has turned beach sand yellow, because ive ridden through way toomuch dirty snow. now its so far into the grit of the base that its just a pain to get out. its more like dye than anythingreally, board still rides great, and its 3 or so years old.My manual is BRAND NEW for this season, and has turned brown in spots (kid ran me off a trail into some funk,also dirt discoloration, but a base cleaner took most of that out)And my last, for whatever reason, is still pure white, which is funny because its the one i ride the most.The color could be a number ofi bought a dud board due to the discoloration
Oooh you mean the ones that dont make it through quality control at the factory like cuz of a minor issue?Thats interesting….If i were u id just take it to the shop and see if they know anything / get it waxed.
Yeah, pure white bases do not last long. The base is p-tex which is a porous material and it absorbs and holds more than just wax. Stains really easily.
i just want to know how to get the wax out of there . the guy wo sold me te board said it was discolored due to the wax he used.
They do make base cleaning solvents, but once a wax or anything is ironed in there, count on it staying there for good — maybe wearing off slightly with time and usage.
