March 27, 2007 at 6:43 pm #106Hey Frosty, First off, i'd just like to say that this is my first year snowboarding, and I'm HOOKED!! I just can't get enough of it!!! I've gone every two weeks since February and plan go every weekend until the season is over. I just wish I lived closer to the slopes 🙁 but I guess four hours away is not so bad, especially when you can take a ski bus… Now, just FYI, I've never actually taken a formal lesson; what i've learned i picked up from a buddy who I always go with and helps me out or from websites like yours (thanks for all the good tips by the way). I think that I've made good progress so far; I can do toe/heel side turns fine, get reasonable speed down the slopes, even got carving down. The only problem I have is with control while carving on the blue slopes. On the green slopes i can carve no problem, but on the harder, steeper slopes it gets tricky for me. I'm goofy footed, and when I start to carve toeside I think I try to edge too much and my tip ends up pointing uphill so I can't complete the carve. Is it better control the amount of edging with my back foot or front foot? Other times I do get the carve, but I catch an edge while evening out between the toe and heelside turns and l fall. Do you have any advice for controlling that? Should I go faster or make my turns wider? Also, this may seem like a stupid question but I've been wondering…when does the snowboarding season formally end? I know it probably depends on the amount of snow on any given year, but do the resorts announce it each year or do they have a set date every year when it ends? Thanks for your help.March 28, 2007 at 3:26 am #2382Hey dude, terrific questions!

As with skidded and other turns on a snowboard, you almost always want to initiate the carve with the front foot, control the bulk of the carve with both feet, and finish using the back foot. Once you get the hang of it, it really helps!

The above will help you with this. This especially applies when on steeper runs like blues and blacks. When completing the carve (or skidded carve or skidded turn for that matter) the back foot will have more weight and angle sending you into a “pure carve” for a moment. This is necessary. When completing the carve (or skidded carve or skidded turn for that matter) the back foot will have more weight and angle sending you into a “pure carve” for a moment. This is necessary. From this you have a solid platform from which you slightly shift your weight downhill and over the front foot and subsequently initiating the next turn. Yes, you can even develop a rhythm to help rock it from top to bottom!

It's a lot like golf. It all depends on where you are and the conditions for that season. Ski/board areas will advertise their “typical” season to help people plan their activities. For example, I was at Hoodoo, OR today and saw they advertised their season extends from Mid-November to Easter. That's a pretty darn long season. Resorts in the south and east will not have a season that long. Some in Colorado and the Northwest will have lifts open through May (sometimes weekends olny though). Some have contracts with the National Forest and are not allowed to stay open even if there is still snow left 🙁 Just call the mountain to make for sure.Hope this helps you and let us know how it goes on your next trip.
April 2, 2007 at 8:00 pm #2395Thanks a million frosty!!! I went to a resort on Lake Tahoe on Sunday and tried the advice you gave and I finally was able to do it!!! I even tried a few basic jumps and even a ramp and was actually able to pull it off (for the most part, when I cleared the ramp I got so excited that I fell 🙁 )You rock!PS: While there I saw a lot of bare patches. It was such a sad sight to see, to know that the season will soon be over… 🙁

LOL that's great. Congrats on your achievements in carving and jumping! I am sure that next season you will be like a rock star out there.
